The Wisselbrunnen soils are strongly influenced by quartzite, loess and marl. These components, along with the minerality typical of this vineyard and vinification in large German oak barrels, bring forth herbal notes, fine fruit and a puristic saltiness in this Riesling.

Description

This is a serious, powerful Rheingau Spatlese from the Jesuitengarten vineyard, one of Spreitzer’s prized Grand Cru sites near the village of Oestrich. The complex soil is a unique blend of loam, loess, shell limestone, sand, and gravel. While the vines average 40+ years of age and are sustainably farmed. Harvest is typically done in mid October and this wine does not see any oak. In the cellar, Spreitzer keeps things as natural as possible. Winemaking includes: whole cluster press, only filtering once, long (mostly native yeast) fermentations, and extended lees aging. The nose bursts with white flowers, green apple, spice and petrol. The crystalline palate is juicy and dense with gorgeous fruit and lively acidity keeping the sweetness in balance. There is great weight on the mid-palate, while the seamless finish of lingering fruit and acidity confirms this is one to hold onto for years to come.
