Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa has been producing traditional Piemonte wines since 1854, from their well-known Barbera, Barolo and Barbaresco bottlings to their light kinky reds such as dry Brachetto and Ruchè. In 2012, after years of searching a willing seller, they acquired vineyards in the small hilltop town of Verduno, one of Piemonte’s most sought after growing areas, with its ‘Monvigliero’ cru being one of the most famous single-vineyard Barolo bottlings. In that same Monvigliero vineyard, they’ve kept a few rows of vines planted to the lithe and herbal rosso leggero elixir variety called Pelaverga. If you enjoy chillable reds with some character, and you like the medieval scents of Harry Potter, Pelaverga could be your next homerun. The variety is only grown in Verduno, and there are only around 10 hectares of it planted.
