Description

Vineyard: The estate of Castello d'Albola is situated in the Chianti Classico area in the province of Siena, Tuscany. The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of 500 metres (1,300 feet) above sea level, although at some points they attain a height of 1,640 feet. The soil consists primarily of the alberese and galestro limestone. Vinification and maturation: After removal of the stalks and crushing, the must is fermented for 12 days in contact with the skins in modern horizontal tanks that assure perfect conditions for vinification, allowing for greater skin contact and flavour concentration. Once the sugar has been converted to alcohol, the wine is racked into large Slavonian oak casks, where it matures and fines for 12 months. That is followed by fining in the bottle for a period of six months. Bottling is carried out in anticipation of release onto the market, with provision for the period of fining.

Vinification:

The 200-acres of Sangiovese grapes used for this wine are first machine-harvested, then fermented with skins using the traditional method. Malolactic fermentation occurs in steel tanks, and afterwards, the wine is aged in 3,400-liter Slavonian oak casks, or "botte", for a year. This is followed by three months of aging in the bottle. The average age of the vines is around 20 years, and since 1999, 25 acres have been replanted per year
